Any applicant who has successfully completed the Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS)(MIDATL-179) course will satisfy the ECDIS training requirements within 46 CFR 11.305(a)(3)(vii) and (b)(2); 46 CFR 11.307(a)(3)vii) and (b)(2); 46 CFR 11.309(a)(4)(xvi) and (c)(2); 46 CFR 11.311(a)(3)(vii) and (b)(2); 46 CFR 11.313(a)(3)(vii) and (b)(2); 46 CFR 11.315(a)(3)(iv) and (b)(2); 46 CFR 11.317(a)(3)(5) and (b)(2); 46 CFR 11.319(a)(4)(x) and (b)(2); and 46 CFR 11.321(a)(3)(5) and (b)(2); AND The specific tasks from the National Assessment Guidelines found in NVIC 10-14 (Tasks 6.1.A 6.2.A, 6.3.A, 6.4.A, 6.5.A, 6.6.A, and 6.7.A), NVIC 11-14 (Tasks 6.1.A, 6.2.A, 6.3.A, 6.4.A, 6.5.A, 6.6.A and 6.7.A), NVIC 12-14 (Tasks 4.1.A and 4.2.A), NVIC 13-14 (Task 1.7.A) and NVIC 13-17 (Task 1.7.A).
Applicants are not required to present the above completed record of assessments when applying for an STCW endorsement.
Those who successfully complete this course should be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge, skill, and understanding of ECDIS navigation and electronic charts to undertake the duties of a navigational watch officer defined by STCW Code, as amended. This course will provide students with the detailed knowledge to support the training outcomes related to navigation at the operational level and in doing so satisfy company, national, and international regulations for candidates for certification as follows in accordance with Table A-II/1:

Knowledge, understanding and proficiency
Navigation using ECDIS
• Knowledge of the capability and limitations of ECDIS operations, including:
a thorough understanding of Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) data, data accuracy, presentation rules, display options and other chart data formats
the dangers of over-reliance
familiarity with the functions of ECDIS required by performance standards in force
• Proficiency in operation, interpretation, and analysis of information obtained from ECDIS, including:
use of functions that are integrated with other navigation systems in various installations, including proper functioning and adjustment to desired settings
safe monitoring and adjustment of information, including own position, sea area display, mode and orientation, chart data displayed, route monitoring, user-created information layers, contacts (when interfaced with AIS and/or radar tracking) and radar overlay functions (when interfaced)
confirmation of vessel position by alternative means
efficient use of settings to ensure conformance to operational procedures, including alarm parameters for anti-grounding, proximity to contacts and special areas, completeness of chart data and chart update status, and backup arrangements
adjustment of settings and values to suit the present conditions
situational awareness while using ECDIS including safe water and proximity of hazards, set and drift, chart data and scale selection, suitability of route, contact detection and management, and integrity of sensors

Function: Navigation at the management level
Maintain the safety of navigation through the use of ECDIS and associated navigation systems to assist command decision making
Note: Training and assessment in the use of ECDIS is not required for those who serve exclusively on ships not fitted with ECDIS. This limitation shall be reflected in the endorsement issued to the seafarer concerned
Knowledge, understanding and proficiency
• Management of operational procedures, system files and data, including:
1.manage procurement, licensing and updating of chart data and system software to conform to established procedures
2.system and information updating, including the ability to update ECDIS system version in accordance with vendor’s product development
3.create and maintain system configuration and backup files
4.create and maintain log files in accordance with established procedures
5.create and maintain route plan files in accordance with established procedures
6.use ECDIS log-book and track history functions for inspection of system functions, alarm settings and user responses
• Use ECDIS playback functionality for passage review, route planning and review of system functions
