Any Applicant who successfully completes the QMED – Oiler-Fireman/Watertender (MIDATL-389) course within 1 year of application will satisfy the professional examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.501(c)(5) for national rating endorsements as QMED-Oiler-Fireman/Watertender; AND receive 60 days of sea service credit towards the sea service requirements of 46 CFR 12.503(a); AND satisfy the following specific assessment tasks from the National Assessment Guidelines for Able Seafarer-Engine (NVIC 18-14), PROVIDED that the applicant was endorsed with the rating of RFPEW prior to starting this course:

Applicants who have successfully completed this course need not present completed “Task Control Sheets” for these assessments in application for STCW certification.

Objective:
This course is in compliance with the requirements of Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (2010) (STCW) Chapter A-III/5 Mandatory minimum requirements for the issue of certificates for QMED-Oiler-Fireman/Watertender and 46 CFR 12.501(c)(5) and shall receive credit for 60 days of the sea service needed for the QMED-Oiler- Fireman/Watertender rating endorsements. This training shall satisfy the requirements of the General Safety, and Oiler and Fireman/Watertender examination modules. The course includes a hands-on practical and a classroom lecture portion for theory and familiarization. The course outline is based upon The Guidelines for Approving Marine Engineering Courses. This course will be the equivalent of demonstrating all competencies appropriate to the diesel and steam propulsion mode assessments from Table A-III/5 of the STCW Code Able Seafarer Engine Certification. Additionally, this course covers all topics addressed in the Hawsepiper to Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch Model Training Program for Oiler-Steam and Motor.
