The 40-Hour Engineering Familiarization course is intended for both deck and engineering ratings that have little or no experience in the engineroom who serve on board a vessel as part of the regular complement and covers the mandatory minimum training requirements for engineering. The training includes basic safety and pollution prevention precautions and procedures, layouts of different types of enginerooms, types of hazards and handling equipment, general operational sequence and engineroom terminology. This course is also named the “Deckeneer Course”

This course familiarizes new hires and deckhands with the engineroom environment and the ability to safely monitor such spaces while conducting machinery space rounds. Major topic areas are as follows:

  • Towing and offshore supply industry and vessel familiarization, as well as the duties of the duty engineer
  • Auxiliary plants, miscellaneous systems, and auxiliary machinery
  • Diesel propulsion plants and machinery
  • Engineroom safety
  • Machinery space rounds
  • Sea project indoctrination
