Any applicant successfully completing the Tank Barge Dangerous Liquids (MIDATL-491) course will satisfy the 46 CFR 13.309 for an endorsement as Tankerman-PIC (Barge); AND satisfy the training requirements of 46 CFR 10.227(d)(8)(i)(C) for renewal of a merchant mariner credential endorsed as Tankerman PIC (Barge) Dangerous Liquids.

Those individuals successfully completing this course of study will have satisfied the requirements of 46 CFR, Part 13 gaining a greater understanding of the responsibilities associated with being the “Person-In-Charge” and should be able to take immediate responsibility for loading, discharging and care in transit or handling of cargo on tank barges.

This course provides training for masters, chief engineers, officers and any person with immediate responsibility for the loading, discharging and care in transit or handling of cargo. It comprises a specialized training program appropriate to their duties, including tank barge safety, fire safety measures and systems, pollution prevention, operational practice and obligations under applicable laws and regulations. Any of this training may be given on board or ashore. It should be supplemented by practical instruction on board and, where appropriate, in a suitable shore-based installation.
