Any applicant who has successfully completed the Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (MIDATL-359) course will satisfy the Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities training requirements of 46 CFR 11.202(b)(4) and Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-4 of the STCW Code.

Due to the vastly different environment on a ship as compared to ashore, this course is designed to prepare new recruits for a life at sea. Working on a ship can be hazardous occupation for the uninitiated. This course will give new seafarers an insight into the various elements of a ship and working procedures on board so that they adjust to the shipboard environment, and are better prepared to cope with any unforeseen circumstances. To that extent this course is planned to make their transition from a shore to a sea career smooth and give some knowledge of ship's working before actually stepping on board.

The lectures are presented in a practical way, concentrating on real life experiences supported by video footage. Personal safety equipment, posters and equipment are available to assist delegates in their learning. The course structure takes delegates through the requirements imposed by a life at sea from the securing of a sea-going post through signing on and daily life on board. The course considers the following main competencies:

  1. Compliance with Emergency procedures
  2. Marine Environmental Awareness & Pollution Prevention
  3. Safe Working Practice
  4. Contribute to effective Communications on board ship
  5. Contribution to human relationships on board ship
  6. Understand and take necessary actions to control fatigue
