Any applicant who successfully completes the Emergency Procedures (Operational Level) (MIDATL-185) course will satisfy the Respond to Emergencies training requirements of Table A-II/1 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010; and 46 CFR 11.309(a)(3),  for certification as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vesels of 500 gross tons (ITC) or greater.   The specific tasks from the National Assessment Guidelines found in NVIC 12-14; Tasks 5.1.A, 5.2.A. and 5.3.A.

This course aims to meet the mandatory minimum requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency in Table A-II/1 STCW Code, as amended, for the function Emergency Procedures at the Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels of 500 or more gross tonnage. This course will provide students with the detailed knowledge to support the training outcomes related to navigation at the operational level and in doing so satisfy company, national, and international regulations for candidates for certification as follows in accordance with Table A-II/1:

Specification of minimum standard of competence for officers in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more.

  • Precautions for the protection and safety of passengers in emergency situations
  • Initial action to be taken following a collision or a grounding; initial damage assessment and control
  • Appreciation of the procedures to be followed for rescuing persons from the sea, assisting a ship in distress, responding to emergencies which arise in port
